Heating & Lighting!
Lighting!
Redfooted tortoise don't tend to like bright lights with coming from a rainforest with canopys off trees above them with sunlight attempting to beam through.
I use a Red heat bulb (100w) many people try not to use these, as they make things look funny (weird) to them! I believe it does not matter if there is another light source in the room! I like to keep a household bulb on to demonstrate day and night..... Just a matter off opinions!
Heating!
Tortoises need a heat source, to be mobile, digest there food and live!
Why you ask!?
Because tortoises..well all reptiles are cold blooded and can not make there own body heat without a heat source...
Temperatures should be something like this...
Basking spot- 95*F-100*F
Air temps- 85*F-90*F
Cold side- 75*F-80*F
Night heating Many people like to use, Ceramic Heat Emitters (CHE) which produce heat but no light, I like to let the temps drop at night for my torts! :)
Heat can be produced from any heat bulb! (Reptile heat bulb!)
UVB- It is argued that UVB is not needed in Redfoots but many other torts it is essential, I personaly dont use a UVB bulb and i have had smooth growth!
But if you wish to provide UVB for your redfoot feel free to do so, but never use a coiled bulb as they can damage a reptiles eyes.
Pyramiding & MBD - Pyramiding is a rising off a tortoises scutes due to lack off humidity bad diet which causes it rarely or no supplementing, This can be stopped! MBD is dangerous! it could kill your tortoise! It is when your tortoise carapace goes miss shaped and deformed....this is pyramiding that has not been stopped! Stop it whilst you can!
